So you've filled in the general application form and have been invited to complete Deloitte's online assessments... What next?

Over the last few weeks, we've been using our resources to put together a clear outline of each stage of Deloitte's 2020 application process. Here's all you need to know about each stage of the application and what Deloitte expects...

Stage one: Immersive Online Assessment

  • Untimed but expected 1hr completion time.

  • This section blends SJT (Situational Judgement Tests) and NRT (Numerical Reasoning Tests)

  • During this assessment, you’ll get a taste of what it might be like to work at Deloitte. It will also help us to understand your key strengths and how they align to our business.

  • They help us to really understand you as an individual and focus on potential rather than solely on your previous work experience or current skills.

  • The assessment will provide you with a range of materials that will outline possible work-based scenarios. You can read through the materials in any order you prefer.

  • There will be questions based on the information you have been provided which you will need to answer. These questions come in a few formats: multiple-choice options, rank order questions with five potential responses for each situation and you will be asked to rank these in order of preference, or slider questions where you can rate on a sliding scale how you would respond to the situation.

Stage two: Job Simulation

  • Online video assessment.

    • The assessment is related to the types of challenges and opportunities you might face once you are in a role at Deloitte.

    • There will be a variety of questions that come in different formats including; written video, multiple-choice responses, and rank order questions.

    • You will be immersed into a business project, similar to what life might be like at Deloitte.

Stage three: Final Stage Assessment

The Final Stage Assessment is broken down into three compartments; a 1:1 Interview, a Group Exercise, and finally, a Presentation.

The 1:1 Interview

  • Your interview will take place virtually over a video interviewing platform.

  • The interview will be with a senior member of staff from the business area and office you are being considered for.

  • Deloitte will give you full details of any other exercises we’ll ask you to complete on the day when you’re booked in for your interview (eg. it's mentioned that some people will have to redo the psychometric tests at this stage).

The Group Exercise

  • The topic will be provided on the day.

  • As the name reveals, you will be put in a group and asked to work through a particular project. Usually, this can be a case study or an exemplar consulting project.

    • This will take place virtually on the same day as your interview.

The Presentation

  • The task will be to prepare a 5-minute presentation (if you would like content on how to execute a good presentation, drop us a comment on the original LinkedIn post!).

  • You will receive the topic in advance of the day so you can prepare

  • The interviewer will ask you questions about your presentation.

  • You may also create an online handout that you can share during the virtual interview if you wish.

  • This will take place virtually on the same day as your interview.

And finally? THE OFFER!

Well... Easier said than done...

Don't panic. It's completely normal to be anxious or stressed. Deloitte is one of the top firms to work at globally, so the application process was never going to be easy. However, as said by Sir Francis Bacon: "Knowledge itself is power", so by reading this blog, you're already taking a step in the right direction. Being aware of what to expect, will immensely improve your performance by giving your preparation a sense of direction. To finish this blog off, we've compiled a bunch of recruiter tips for each stage of the application.

Recruiter tips

Immersive Online Assessment

  • When responding to the questions, respond based on what feels most natural to you, not what you think we want to hear.

  • The questions will be tapping into your strengths, so just choose the option that feels right for you.

  • Being honest in your answers will help you reflect on whether the role is right for you too.

  • UCC Members: drop us a message and we'll share one of our extra useful resources for this ;)

Job Simulation

  • Find a comfortable and quiet place to complete the assessment.

  • Wear clothes that you would wear to work, smart is best.

  • Complete all the practice questions which you are given access to at the start of the assessment. They will help you get used to the technology.

  • The following link is a REALLY good resource for the type of questions/scenarios you can expect to see: https://gradinsight.co.uk/deloitte-job-simulation/

Final Stage Assessment: The 1:1 Interview

  • Just like an in-person interview, prepare in advance.

  • Remind yourself of any activities in the past that you’ve done that can help demonstrate your skills and qualities.

  • Review your Immersive Online Assessment feedback report and consider the questions you’re likely to be asked and what your response would be.

  • Listen to the question the interviewer is asking you and take time to consider your answer

  • Try to express yourself clearly and concisely.

  • Think in advance of questions to ask your interviewer, try to ask questions that you can’t find anywhere else online.

  • For the interview think about the following:

1. What do your friends and family say you are good at?

2. What do you truly enjoy doing, and how do you behave when you are performing best at a task?

3. What achievements are you most proud of, and how did you achieve them?

Final Stage Assessment: The Group exercise

  • Prepare for an Icebreaker – introduce yourself.

  • Contribute, but do not dominate.

  • Be assertive, but not aggressive.

  • Speak clearly and confidently.

  • Listen and don’t interrupt.

  • Be diplomatic.

  • Keep an eye on the time and stay focused on the overall objective.

  • Remember: consultants are expected to work in a TEAM (quite literally constantly) so this exercise is designed to assess how much of a team player you are and whether you can adapt to new teams.

  • PSA: often the tasks they give you are virtually impossible to complete to a good standard in the time provided - but that's exactly the point. They want to see how you cope under ridiculous time pressure and whether you're able to produce something coherent in that time frame.

Final Stage Assessment: The Presentation

  • Think about the questions that may come up.

  • Listen to the questions asked.

  • Be clear and structure your answers.

  • Practice – stay within time.

  • Stay. Hydrated. I repeat STAY HYDRATED. You'd be amazed at what a swig of water can do for nerves.

And that's it... We hope that this article has been insightful and we wish you all the best in your application to Deloitte!
